2型糖尿病患者は、併症発症・進展予防のために、食事療法や運動療法、薬物療法といった療養行動を日々の生活の中に組み込んでいかなければならない。しかし、療養行動をこれまでの生活の中に組み込み、継続していくことは容易なことではない。さらに、糖尿病は一旦診断されると生涯を通して療養行動が求められるため、その間に発達課題や身体的変化、様々なライフイベントの中で患者が積極的に自己管理に参加し、自己決定をしながら療養行動を継続していく必要がある。患者がQOLを維持しながら療養行動を実施、継続するには、患者は医療者の指示を守る受動的な存在ではなく、「糖尿病は患者のものであり、患者自身が問題を解決して、治療方針を立てていく権利と能力を持っている（Anderson RM, Funnel MM, 2000）」存在と捉える重要性がいわれている。そこで、患者が日々の生活、また人生の場面で、主体的に選択し決定し実行できる力、つまりEmpowermentを発揮できるように糖尿病教育が行われている。米国ではAndersonら（2000）によって「The Diabetes Empowerment Scale（以下、DES）」が開発され、患者教育の内容評価に用いられている。しかし、日本においてはEmpowermentを評価する尺度は未だ開発されておらず、DES日本語試作版（以下、試作版）の報告が1件あるのみである。よって、本研究では日本人2型糖尿病患者のためのEmpowerment尺度を開発することにより、日本人糖尿病患者がQOLを維持しながら療養行動を継続するための糖尿病患者教育がさらに発展することに貢献できると考える。
