项目摘要

本研究はエリザベス朝英文学におけるケルト諸地域の文学的表象を考察することを目的としているが、本年度の研究成果は、1999年中に刊行された以下の二論文にまとめられている。1.「文献解題:初期近代英文学とナショナリズムの問題-「ブリテン」の位置付けを巡って」においては、シェイクスピアを中心とする初期近代英文学研究におけるナショナリズムの問題を扱った研究書について、David Baker,Between Nations(Stanford,1997)を中心に、1990年代に出版されたものの内、重要な著作に触れながら解説をし、特に、ブリトン時代から大ブリテン王国形成に至る、歴史的な変化を考慮に入れた上での、「ブリテン」という概念の文学における表象の研究について、今後の展望を含めて論じた。2.「レアの王国とリアの王国-「ブリトン史」とジェイムズ朝文学」では、シェイクスピアがジェイムズ朝に書いた『リア王』とその材源の一つと考えられている作者不明のエリザベス朝劇『レア王』を、それぞれの主人公リア・レアの三人の娘婿達の称号を手がかりとして、領土の範囲、王権の性格、外交政策の三点から比較することによって、『レア王』のエリザベス朝的性格と『リア王』のジェイムズ朝演劇としての特質を指摘し、両劇作品がそれぞれの創作年代の政治的背景を反映していることを論じた。また、2000年4月に開催されるアメリカ・シェイクスピア学会におけるセミナー"The Publicity of the Early Modern Stage"の為に提出した論文、"To Play a Tom of Bedlam"も、この研究の成果に基づくものである。
