ほぼ当初計画通り、以下のように研究を実施した。1 総合商社の海外投資に関する2次資料・文献の収集および分析 内外の公刊図書・資料、商社業界誌(商社関係会社一覧などを含む)、各商社の社史・有価証券報告書など主に高額の資料を収集した。これら資料の整理・分析の結果、総合商社9社の成長過程、きわめてグローバルな事業展開の変遷が明らかになった。2 事業所リストの作成、統計分析 収集した公刊資料・社内資料に基づき、1996年3月時点における9大総合商社の世界中の支店・事務所および関係会社のリストをコンピュータ入力し、1962年以降の変化を統計解析した。入力処理にあたっては研究補助者を任用した。分析の結果、9大商社の従業員配置は基本的には日本との輸出入の動向を反映しているが、北米・欧州・アジア間における明瞭な地域的シフトが検出された。3 インタビュー調査 2次資料では解読困難な現場動向を明らかにするため、主要総合商社などにおいてインタビュー調査を実施した。北米・欧州の両地域では地域統括本社を設置し、分権化および現地化を進めていること、またアジア地域、とりわけ中国が1990年代の地域戦略のターゲットになっていることが解明された。4 研究成果のレビュー 英国・マンチェスター大学ディッケン教授、およびイタリア・ボロ-ニャ大学コンティ教授のもとを訪問し、以上の研究成果に対して世界的水準でのレビューを受けた。その結果、成果の一部を共著論文として英国地理学会誌に発表することができた。
