ほぼ当初計画通り、以下のように研究を実施した。1 総合商社の海外投資に関する2次資料・文献の収集および分析 内外の公刊図書・資料、商社業界誌、各商社の年次レポート・有価証券報告書・社史、日本貿易会およびジェトロ発行の資料を収集した。これまでの整理分析の結果、総合商社をオ-ガナイザーとする“日本型"海外投資の特徴が明らかになった。しかしながらヨーロッパに焦点を当てた資料は十分でなく今後とも収集に努める必要がある。2 事業所リスト・データベースの作成および分析 収集した公刊資料・社内資料に基づき、1962年・72年・82年・87年・92年の5カ年について、9大総合商社の世界中の関係事業所リストを作成した。その数は膨大で、合計1万箇所をこえるが、研究補助者を任用してコンピュータへの入力処理をほぼ完了した。これまでの分析の結果、9大商社の従業員配置は世界経済の地域的動向に密接に関係していることが解明された。3 インタビュー調査 2次資料では解読困難な現場動向を明らかにするため、9大商社各社および日本貿易会、ジェトロなどにおいてインタビュー調査を実施した。会談内容はテープに録音し、のちに研究補助者を任用し文書化した。大手商社は各社ともEU市場統合に対応して対ヨーロッパ戦略を再編しつつあり、従来の各国別の展開からヨーロッパ全体を見渡す地域統括会社へと組織を変更したことなどが明らかになった。総合商社の事業は経済動向を常に先取りする形で展開してきており、したがって今後も現場の情報収集に努める必要がある。
