前年度に引き続き、今年度に行った研究成果は、以下の通りである。(1) 謝金を利用し、江戸時代の知識人の経世論の中で活字化されているもの(『日本経済大典』中の文書など)の目録作成に着手した。(2) 仙台藩関係の一次史料に関しては、その一部について判読を試みた。その結果、専売制度の可否をめぐる、新たな議論を発見することができた。しかし、論者ごとの議論の相違を整理するにとどまった。今後の課題としては、専売制度に関する論争や論点の推移を、時系列的に把握し、当時の市場社会の成熟度と思想界の有機的関連性を明らかにすることが残されたと言える。この課題は、今後とも重要なテーマとして取り組む予定である。その際、重要なこととして、生の史料に深く食い込んでいく(具体的には、くずし字を判読する)力量が必要であると同時に、対象を客観的に位置づけ、鳥瞰するような視点を持つことが必要不可欠であると痛感するに至った。重たい課題である。(3) 昨年度の報告書では、本研究の二本柱である「経世論」と「町人思想」の研究のうち、まずは前者を中心に研究の土台を作るという計画を述べた。しかし、経世論、専売制度についての議論を整理する中で、やはり両者は表裏一体の関係にあると考えるに至った。(4) 如上のごとく、本研究の成果を目に見える形で発表するには、かなりの時間を有すると考えるに至った。そこで、当初の計画には挙げていなかったが、明治維新初期の経世論、具体的には田口卯吉の思想について若干の考察を行った。この考察は、本研究の対象を、時系列的には逆向きに、すなわち遡行的に観察する視点を獲得することで、少しでも研究を前進させることができると考えたからである。
