まず大阪市立大学の所蔵する年代記・修道院文書にみられる貴族のイエのデータを整理した。つづいて、当初予定していたサブ・テーマのうちとくにイエに対する貴族たちの意識の研究を行なった。具体的には、貴族がそのイエに所蔵・保管していた文書の分析を通じて、彼らの祖先意識・社会意識(とくに皇帝に対する意識)を明らかにせんとした。11世紀ビザンツの貴族は、みずからの所領の権利文書の他に、本人および祖先の活動の記録として皇帝から受領した文書や手紙を保管している。ここに彼らがイエを自分たちの活動の拠点として重視していたことが現われている。しかしながら、その文書保管体制は、たとえば日本の中世武士の場合と比べると、かなり杜撰であった。その原因は彼らが所蔵する文書の大半が皇帝文書であり、皇帝の発給した文書は国家によって控えが作成されていたため、個々の貴族が文書の保管にそれほど神経質にならなくてもよかったことにあると考えられる。このことは、彼ら貴族がイエを拠点に自立意識を高めつつも、なお皇帝権力・国家機構に依存していたことを示している。この時期のビザンツ貴族の二面性は彼らの文書保管体制にも現われているのである。以上の結論は論文「11世紀ビザンツ貴族の家文書」にまとめた。年度の後半は設備備品費で購入した史料・文献の整理と、それらを用いての研究、とくに貴族がそのイエを改造して設立した修道院の研究に重点をおいた。修道院のありかたから貴族のイエを復元するこの作業は、さきに発表した論文「遺言状からみた11世紀ビザンツ貴族のイエ」でも部分的に行なわれている。また当時ビザンツ帝国を訪れた西欧人がビザンツ貴族のイエをどう理解していたかについても、十字軍史料などを取り上げて検討しつつあるが、これもまだまとまった結論には至っていない。
