3点だけ指摘しておく。(1)国際理解教育は、世界的な展望の中で自国のイメージについて再解釈する道を開き、将来へ向けて新しい国家観を構築する役割を果たしつつある。例えば、オーストラリアは,1970年代に、白豪主義を廃棄して多文化主義を国家政策として採用する大きな社会変化を経験した。オーストラリアの多文化教育の学習内容では、この大転換点を、オーストラリアの自己イメージが、「古いオーストラリア」から「新しいオーストラリア」へと変化したことを明らかにしている。多文化主義の「新しい自己イメージ」や新しい国家観を提示する迫力あるものとなっている。(2)わが国では、「国際理解教育の目標」と「学校の教育目標」との結びつきが、必ずしも明確になっていない。オーストラリアの多文化教育は、「オーストラリアという多文化社会に積極的に参加し得る能力と態度を育てる」ことを目標としており、それは学校の教育目標とうまく一致している。(3)オーストラリアの多文化教育では、教育プログラムや教材を評価する基準のチェックリストを開発している。オーストラリア社会が英国文化によって成立しているという白豪主義の伝統的な見解に挑戦をいどみ、多民族・多言語・多文化という新しい価値を提示している。
