A Study of Mongolian Language in Chinese-Mongolian Lexicons.

From the time of Yuan dinasty of 13-14th centuries to Ching dinasty of 17-19th centuries, many kinds of Chinese-Mongolian lexicons have been compiled and published in China such as "Zhi-yuan Yi-yu", "Hua-yi Yi-yu(A, B, C)", "Bei-lu Yi-yu", and so on. Most of them are thesauruses, that is, the words are grouped and arranged by their meanings. Such lexicons are quite valuable from the point of view of historical linguistics of Mongolian language because Mongolian words are transcribed by means of Chinese characters in them, which enables us to presume colloquial pronunciations of Mongolian of those times.The perpose of this research is to collect and arrange the philological data of such Chinese-Mongolian lexicons which are compiled during the dinasties of Yuan, Ming, and Ching in China, and to study meanings and pronunciations of the Mongolian words recorded in them. In the course of research, all the entries of "Zhi-yuan Yi-yu", "Hua-yi Yi-yu(A)", "Hua-yi Yi-yu(B)", and "Bei-lu Yi-yu" have been inputted into personal computer which include Mongolian words written by Chinese characters, their romanized transcriptions, and Chinese translations.As one of the results of this reseach, combined indeces of Hua-yi Yi-yu have been compiled and submitted with this report. The indices consist of three parts : (1) an index of all the Mongolian words with Chinise transcription and Chinese translation, (2) an index of all the Chinese characters which denote Mongolian words, and (3) an index of Chinese words.
