学術文献における漢字語彙の使用実態を調査・分析し、それぞれに細分化された分野を専攻する留学生などの個々の学習者に対して、組織的かつ個別的に対応できるような日本語漢字語彙教育システムを開発することを目的として,医学分野で以下のような研究を行った。(1)医学専門文献のデータベース化。『医学中央雑誌』CD-ROM版を使用し,抄録の付された文献についてダウンロードして,分析のためのデータベースとした。(2)上記データベースにおける漢字および漢字語彙の使用頻度調査。パソコン上で文字列処理用各種プログラムAWK,SED,SORTFなどを使用した簡便な頻度調査の利用を試みた。(3)上記調査結果の特性の分析。その結果,以下のような知見を得た。(1)日本語の語彙を区切ることは厳密には難しいが,語彙教育のための基礎データ収集に目的を限定することによって,一定の区切りの基準をもうけることが可能になる。(2)予め設定された基準に基づく語彙のカウントは,上記の文字列処理プログラムを用いることによって,安価なパソコンを用いて簡便に行うことができる。(3)今回の医学文献の調査およびこれまでに行った経済学文献の調査を見る限りでは,専門文献の使用漢字については,350±50字程度の漢字でカバー率90%,600±50字程度の漢字で同95%が達成される。これは,漢字語彙教育の有用な目安となり得る。(4)医学分野では,上記の『医学中央雑誌』CD-ROM版の存在により調査が容易であった。他の分野ではこのような簡便性を供えた日本語文献のデータベースは少ないようであるが,出版の電子化が進んでおり,分析の対象として有用なデータベースは今後増加するだろう。留学生の指導教員や所属学科の教員の研究論文や著書の原稿をデータベースとして同様の分析を行い,当該学習者用の語彙教育教材を作成することも可能である。
