本研究は、異分母分数の加算を題材として、選択肢を付した問題の提示により始まる集団討論のやり方(選択群)と児童が自発的に構成した答えをもとに行う集団討論のやり方(自発群)との間で、討論の展開やそこからの認知的所産がどう異なるかを検討した。被験者は、6つの小学校の4、5年生289名である。次のような結果が明らかにされた。(1)どちらの群でも、討論を通じて、大部分の児童が(実験者から正誤のフィードバックが与えられる前に)正答を知ることができた。(2)自発群の討論では、選択群に比べ、討論の過程で、特に正解に関してより多様な発言(説明や質問、反対意見、異なった問題での探究を含む)が引き出された。(3)自発群の児童は、転移テストの成績がより優れた傾向にあった。選択群が転移可能な知識の獲得という点で劣っていたのは、ライバルとなる選択肢が討論において容易に論破されるものであったため、党派的動機づけに基づく集団理解活動の分業がうまく機能しなかったためだと考えられた。算数科の授業において上で述べた2つのタイプの討論がそれぞれもつ長所と短所は次のようにまとめられる。選択群の条件での討論は、検討するべき考えが提示され、その意味でそこからの所産をある程度予測することができるが、正解がどれかが簡単にわかってしまう場合には、単調な検討に終わりやすい。自発群の条件での討論では、個人間の差異の解消のために討論が展開され、探究的な活動も見られるが、すべての子の考えが検討される保障がないという点で限界がある。二つの方法は、状況に応じて柔軟に使用することが必要であろう。
