Computer-Assisted Study of Early Modern English

This project is an attempt to establish a practical method of using computerized corpora in the hope to make up the lacunae in the study of the history of the English language. Our original plan was to take up the Helsinki Corpus of the English Texts and the OED on CD-ROM for our material. In our actual research, However, we have expanded our scope to include various other materials and periods. We have thus employed even a Middle English poem to investigate the characteristic patterns of vocabulary, the result of which may in the future be used for the further study of the vocabulary in the EModE.We also conducted an international symposium on Ancrene Riwle at Osaka University on January 25,1996, inviting Prof. Tadao Kubouchi of the University of Tokyo and Prof. Yoko Wada of Kansai Unuversity as panelists, with nearly 50 participants. He has also made a comparative study in the U.S.of early American prose material for establishing pronunciation from written material.
