本年度は大きく分けて2つの研究を行った。1つ目は、日本語の束縛形式である「自分」の二つの属性、主語指向性と長距離束縛性の獲得を、日本語を第2言語として学習する英語母語話者の学童年齢の子どもたちを対象に調査した。実験方法は、筆者が母語の幼児を対象に調査した方法と全く同様の方法を採用している。結果は、(1)主語指向性と長距離束縛性の獲得にはそれぞれ別のメカニズムが働いていること、つまり、両者の獲得は独立しておこなわれていることが判明した。この結果は筆者が調査した母語獲得の結果と同一である。そして、Katada(1991)やAikawa(1993,1999)の言語理論と相反し、中村(1996)の主張を支持する結果となった。(2)少なくとも主語指向性の獲得には母語からの転移が働いていないことが判明した。2つ目は、第2言語獲得の初期状態の調査である。被験者は日本の小学校に通う2名の英語母語話者である。彼らの発話を縦断的に収集し分析した。調査結果は、第2言語獲得の場合、句構造は最初からCPまで存在し、さらにD,I,Cといった機能範疇も最初から出現することが判明した。また、句構造に関わる誤りは観察されず、語順に関する誤りはほとんど生じ得ないことも明らかになった。これらの観察結果は、第2言語獲得では、最初期から句構造規則は完成されているという仮説を支持するものとなり、第2言語獲得はどのような状態から開始されるのかという疑問への1つの回答となった。
