東南アジア・太平洋及びマダガスカルで話される「オーストロネシア諸語」は、単一の言語、すなわち、オーストロネシア祖語から発達したと考えられているが、現在では多様な特徴を示している。代名詞の数の体系についても例外ではなく、数の区別がなく人称の対立のみが見られるもの(インドネシアの言語の一部)、単数・複数の二数対立を持つもの(フィリピン諸語など)、双数が加わった三数対立をもつもの(ポリネシア諸語など)、さらに少数(または三数)を含む四数対立を持つもの(フィジー語など)、それ以上の数の区別をするもの(ヴァヌアツ諸語など)など、さまざまである。本研究では、このようなオーストロネシア諸語の代名詞の数の体系について、その発達の過程と動機を明らかにすることを目的とし、これまでに再建された各下位祖語それぞれの代名詞について、近年入手可能になった新しい言語データを加え、上位祖語との比較という視点を加味して再検討した。次に、オーストロネシア祖語から現在みられる諸言語までの変化を、それぞれの下位言語群についてまとめ、その結果に基づいて、数体系の変化とそれに伴う形態変化のパターンを類型論的に整理し、オーストロネシア諸語全体に起こった数の体系の変化の流れと、それに関与した言語学的特徴を考察した。その結果、オーストロネシア諸語における数の発達は、PEP(Proto-Extra Formosan)の時点で存在したパラダイムのギャップを整合化する方向へ三つの異なる発達をとげて、現在のフィリピンタイプ、マレータイプ、オセアニアタイプが生まれたことを示した。さらに、オセアニアタイプでは、諸言語において動的な数の変化がみられていること、これは、他の二タイプと異なり、結果として発達したパラダイムが安定したシステムになっていないためであることを示した。
