本研究は、英語の同族目的語構文と軽動詞構文(have/take a V構文など)をとり上げ、コーパスデータを基に、各構文のプロトタイプやスキーマを規定し、その中心的用法から拡張例までを含む構文カテゴリーの内部構造、及び、カテゴリー拡張と文脈や出現頻度との関連を捉えることを目指した。まず、2つの大規模コーパスBritish National Corpus(約1億語)とWord Banks(約5,600万語)、及びWeb検索により、各構文の用例を収集し、各構文に現れる動詞や名詞の使用頻度を集計した。また、研究対象とする構文の類例や、頻出する動詞や名詞などが用いられる他の構文などのデータも抽出・整理し、適宜インフォーマントにその容認性などについて確認した。次に、各構文内のカテゴリーに関しては、認知文法で提唱されている「動的使用基盤モデル(dynamicusage-based model)」の考え方に基づき、これまで収集した周辺的(非典型的)な用例も含む動的なカテゴリー構造を提案し、さらに、形式が似ている構文カテゴリーどうしの関連性についても、データをもとに検証した。例えば、同族目的語構文の場合、コーパスデータの集計結果から、動詞dieがよく用いられていることが分かる。しかし、dieの同族目的語構文は、その意味的・統語的特異性によりプロトタイプとみなすことはできない。そのため出現頻度とプロトタイプ規定との間に「ずれ」がみられることになるが、動詞dieの使用頻度が高いために、[DIE a〜DEATH]という構文スキーマが確立し、生産性を高めている結果につながっているということが、コーパスデータから裏付けられる。また、使用頻度の高い動詞においては、その類例の数も多いという結果が得られた。具体性のどのレベルでスキーマが確立するかによって、表現のバリエーションが広がる可能性も変わるという実態を数の上でもつかむことができた点は意義があると思われる。各構文レベルでのカテゴリー、及び構文間のカテゴリー関係を視野に入れた本研究の成果については、現在論文という形でそのまとめの最終段階に入っており、学術誌へ投稿予定である。
