In previously, we reported several functional properties containing antibacterial potency of Sawa-wasabi (Wasabia japonica), a traditional spice and a special product of our prefecture. We also studied on antioxidative and antimutagenic effects of green tea (Camelia sinenses) a traditional beverage of Japan. In this paper, our purpose was to elucidate the combined preventive effect of wasabi and green tea to Helicobacter pylori induced stomach cancer. The epidemiological data between incidence of stomach cancer and intake of wasabi and/or green tea was required in this experiments. We obtained this following results from this study.(1) The ether extracts and water soluble fraction of wasabi leaves showed strong antioxdative activity.(2) The rhizomes and leaves of wasabi showed growth inhibition and disinfection to H.pylori.(3) Wasabi leaf extract showed strong radical scavenging activity.(4) The mixture of wasabi and green tea extracts exhibited bactericidal effect to H.pylori. additively.(5) By oral administration of wasabi leaf extract to H.pylori. injected Mongolian gerbils, the number of bacteria, injury and petechial hemorrhange scores of gastric mucosa was significantly decreased.(6) By epidemiological studies, the producing areas of wasabi and green tea stomach cancer SMR was lower than those of control areas. These experimental data demonstrates that the combined preventive effect between wasabi and green tea to H.pylori. infection might be expected.
