エイズ医療に関する二つの課題に取り組んだ。最初の課題は、エイズ発症機序を数理モデル解析により明らかにすることである。提案モデルの特徴は、HIV逆転写酵素の動的な転写エラー率変化、HIVのもろ刃の剣的状況を考慮した点にある。モデル解析により、転写エラー率に関して、エイズの発症を決定する閾値が存在することを明らかにした。第二の課題は、HIV薬剤耐性化を起こさない薬剤ターゲットの特徴を同定することである。ここでは、ドラッグディスカバリーの分野で注目されているネットワークアプローチによる研究手法を採用した。成果として、複数の宿主因子と相互作用をもつ「ハブ」HIVタンパク質が、薬剤耐性化を起こしにくいということを確率モデルで証明した。
