偏位咬合の増悪は習慣性咀嚼によるメカニカルストレスに顎骨が適応していくことが一つの要因として考えられてきた。偏位咬合患者のCT画像より下顎骨と咀嚼筋を取り出し、咀嚼筋の断面積と走行から筋力ベクトルを決定し、下顎骨における三次元有限要素解析を行った。その結果、偏位側においてより広範囲な応力の分布が観察され、これにより応力分布の非対称性が、成長期における下顎骨の非対称性の増悪に関与している可能性が示唆された。
