平成23年度は主に、1、自殺の経済学的分析と2、高齢化社会における社会保障の政治的決定の研究を行った。1.1990年代後半以降、日本において自殺問題は最も深刻な社会問題の一つとなっている。自殺者は1997年～1998年にかけてのいわゆる金融危機の時期に35%もの急増を見せ、1998年以降は毎年3万人以上の自殺者がいる。そこで、所得の減少や流動性制約が人々を自殺に追い込むのではないかという仮説のもと、自殺研究に経済学的な視点をもたらすことが急務であると判断し研究を行なった。具体的には、1997年から1998年にかけての金融危機と自殺者急増の関係と、1998年以降の自殺者数の高止まりの原因を寄与度分解と回帰分析を使って明らかにした。結果、1998年の自殺者の急増は主に中高年の男性によるところが大きく、なかでも自営業者の自殺がこの時期に急増していることが大きく影響していた。そして、失業率と自己破産件数が自殺率に有意な影響を与えていた。これは金融危機時の「貸し剥がし・貸し渋り」によって、多くの自営業者が倒産し、多くの雇用者も失業したことから、彼らが自殺においこまれたということができる。そして1998年以降の高止まりは20代,30代の若年層の自殺の増加が寄与していることを明らかにした。そこで、なぜ若年層の自殺が増加しているのかという問題に対して、雇用状態に注目した研究も行った。その研究により、若年層の非正規雇用の増加と同年齢層の自殺率の増加は強い正の相関があり、40, 50代の中年層の無業率と同年齢層の自殺率に相関があることを明らかにした。また、研究を遂行するにあたっては、自死遺族の方々から、自殺した方が持っていたであろう悩みや職業等の状況、遺族支援の実情の聞き取りも行った。2.高齢化が税率と政府支出に占める社会保障費の割合に与える影響について投票行動を含んだ理論モデルを完成させた。現在、国際学術雑誌へ投稿準備中である。
