The prestige of Received Pronunciation has been declined since 1980s, and a social variety called Estuary has emerged and permeated among younger speakers in London. We started the present study in order to decide whether Estuary English could stand as a most influential model of English as a Lingua Franca (hereafter ELF). In 2011 we took linguistic data for analysis from female participants in their 20s, who worked at University College London, and found several linguistic changes undesirable for Japanese students of the English language. Therefore, we concluded that the Estuary variety could not be suitable for the model of ELF. Furthermore, it was confirmed that Estuary English had already been old-fashioned at the Conference on Language Variation and Change held at the University of Sheffield in 2013.

20世纪80年代以来，标准发音的地位有所下降，一种名为河口的社会变体出现并渗透到伦敦的年轻人中。我们开始了本研究，以确定是否河口英语可以作为最有影响力的模式，英语作为一种语言弗兰卡（以下简称ELF）。2011年，我们对在伦敦工作的20多岁女性参与者的语言数据进行了分析，发现一些语言变化对学习英语的日本学生来说是不可取的。因此，我们得出结论，河口的变化可能不适合ELF模型。此外，2013年在谢菲尔德大学举行的语言变异和变化会议上证实，河口英语已经过时。
