報告者の研究目的は、地域社会で育まれ、継承されてきた民俗宗教が、いかに近代化や、他の宗教教団の流入により、変容するのかを分析することである。本研究では、主に東北地方で教勢を伸ばした新宗教教団、大和教団を事例に、新宗教教団がいかに地域社会に溶け込み、巫者信仰の担い手として活動しているのかを調査、考察してきた。本研究の目的である民俗宗教と新宗教の関わりを明らかにするために、報告者は現在まで、大和教団の教団本部が設置されている宮城県仙台市、気仙沼市、そして秋田県湯沢市を中心に実地調査を行っていた。大和教団の教団職員兼霊能者である「巫女」が、地域社会において人々に親しまれてきた「拝み屋さん」や「カミサマ」といわれる民間宗教者として地域に溶け込み、信者を増やしている事例があった。また、民間宗教者がいなくなってしまった土地に大和教団の「巫女」が巫業を行ない、信者を獲得し、教会を設立した事例もあり、大和教団が衰退する巫者信仰を補完する役割を果たしていることがわかった。大和教団の「巫女」養成については、開祖の成巫過程をもとにしており、養成を可能とする教団の教えが形成されている。こうした養成過程は、突発的な神がかりから、巫者となることを否定し、修行を行うことで巫業を行う力を得ることができると考えられている。この修行を重視する教団運営は、信者から巫者を生み出すことを可能にするものである。近代化と地域の民俗宗教の考察を深めるために、日本人移民の葬送方法とその国への影響を考察した。シンガポールでは、日本人移民が政府に先立ち、他の民族が使用できる火葬炉を建設し、火葬の需要にこたえている事例があった。火葬の普及には、日本人移民などのマイノリティの存在が重要なものであり、近代化による民俗宗教の変容を促したことを明らかにした。
