本年度は、前年度までの基礎的な研究によって整備した形而上学的諸概念を、科学哲学と倫理学の問題に応用する研究を行った。科学哲学の問題への応用に関しては、昨年度に引き続き、森田紘平氏（京都大学文学研究科）との共同研究を行うことにより、以下の成果を得た。まず、存在的構造実在論が抱える諸問題を具体的な事例をもとに整理し、それらの諸問題の源泉が存在的構造実在論の依拠する形而上学的概念の不明確さにあることを確認した。次に、そうした形而上学的概念を明確化し、存在的構造実在論の主張の再定式化を提案するとともに、現代物理学から得られる経験的知見がどの程度その主張を支持すると考えられるかを明らかにした。これらの成果は、現代物理学が示す経験的事実からどのような論証過程を経て存在的構造実在論の形而上学的主張が正当化されうるのか、という問いへの解答を与えるものである。倫理学の問題への応用に関しては、死の害悪をめぐる問題を事例として、福利的価値が特定の出来事に帰属される際の形而上学的基盤について考察した。特に、死後の無と誕生前の無の対称性に基づいて死の害悪を否定したルクレティウスの議論を検討することにより、以下の成果を得た。まず、ルクレティウスの議論を死の価値に関する論証として再構成する仕方を検討し直し、出来事の形而上学的特性と価値論的特性を結びつけるテーゼが担っている役割を明確化した。次に、ルクレティウス的論証に対する二つの反論（対称説と非対称説）がそれぞれ抱えている問題点を整理し、非対称説の既存の戦略をより穏健なかたちで立て直しうることを確認するともに、死の害悪についての典型的な説明である剥奪説のもとでその新たな戦略を具体的に展開するための方策を提案した。これらの成果は、基礎づけに対応する形而上学的説明が倫理学的探究において果たしうる役割を明らかにすることに寄与するものである。
