次年度にあたる平成29年度は研究計画に沿って、日米安全保障条約改定の成立過程とその役割について、米国の東アジア政策（地域情勢、国内政治、軍事）から再考察する研究に取り組んだ。この取り組みについて本年度、国内では国立国会図書館、外務省外交史料館等の施設を中心に資料の閲覧と記録をおこなった。また昨年度に引き続き、米比、米韓、米華相互防衛条約と日米安全保障条約との比較検討等のため、米国や英国での資料調査とインタヴュー調査を実施した。平成29年6月に開催された「神戸大学・北京外国語大学国際共同研究拠点設立シンポジウム」では、登壇者および会場フロアと活発な議論をおこない、1950年代の米中協議が日本側の日米安保改定に与えた影響について考察した。また米国の国立公文書館に加え、大統領図書館にも足を運び、アイゼンハワー政権全般の対日安全保障政策についても調査を広げている。こうした資料調査や学会報告でのフィードバックを得たうえで、米国にとっての日米安保改定が在日米軍基地の安定的供給につながるだけでなく、1970年代に至るまでの「二つの中国」問題に対応するための東アジア地域の安全保障体制確立の一部であったとする本研究の論旨は昨年度から一貫している。外交史的アプローチから従来の安保改定に関する日米の政治的要因に加えて、米国と当時の主要国との史料にも分析対象を広げつつも、米国内の軍部、そして国務省など米国内の視点にも注目することで各政策決定機関の姿勢変化解明に迫る点は、本研究の継続した特徴である。以上の調査を踏まえ、適宜、論文投稿など研究成果としてまとめる。
