自伝的記憶とは個人が自分の人生において経験した出来事に関する記憶である。多くの研究者がこの記憶がセルフや自我同一性の基盤として機能している可能性を指摘しているが,その関連を実証的に検討した研究は少ない。本研究は自伝的記憶と自我同一性との関わりを,2つの視点から探索的に検討した。1.自我同一性地位と想起される自伝的記憶の安定性大学生を対象に加藤(1983)の「自我同一性地位判定尺度」を2ヶ月半の間隔をおいて繰り返し実施した。同時に「これまでの人生を振り返って重要と思われる出来事」を思い出して10個まで自由記述で回答することを求めた。2回ともに回答し,かつ1回目と2回目で同じ同一性地位に判定された回答者は34名であった(モラトリアム6名,拡散2名,A-F中間3名,D-M中間23名)。各人の自伝的記憶の内容を分析し,同じ出来事が2回繰り返し報告されている率を検討したところ,モラトリアム群で0.34,D-M中間群で0.31,A-F中間群で0.10,拡散群で0.09であり,想起される自伝的記憶の安定度が同一性地位によって異なることが示された。2.職業選択を支える自伝的記憶青年期において職業選択は同一性の達成に関わる重要な課題である。そこで自伝的記憶が職業選択に関与する可能性を検討するために,教員養成系大学の学生を対象に教職を希望する者とそうでない者で,教師にまつわる思い出に質的・量的な違いが見られるか質問紙調査を行った。その結果,1)教職を強く希望する者は希望しない者に較べて,中学時代の教師に対する快記憶を多く想起すること,2)教職を希望しない者では逆に,中学時代の教師に対する不快な記憶を多く想起することが示された。ただしこの差異は報告された思い出の絶対数の違いによるものではなく,個々人の中での快記憶と不快記憶の比率が重要であることが示唆された。教職希望者においても不快な記憶がないわけではない。しかしそれ以上に快記憶が多いのである。また希望しない者においても決して快記憶がないわけではない。しかし快記憶以上に不快な記憶を多く想起するのである。さらに報告された思い出の中でも特に「教師から強い影響を受けた」という回答を分析したところ,教職希望者では快記憶が多かったのに対し,希望しない者では快記憶と不快記憶の報告数に差が無かった。以上の結果から,中学時代の教師にまつわる快で影響力の強い思い出が,教職志望という進路選択の背景にあることが示唆された。
