わが国の公共空間が秩序化される過程において、それを具体的に推進する担い手となったのは警察である。ところが、警察関係の資料は、内容の分析以前に、所在の確定や利用できる状況の把握といった点で未だ十分な環境にない。公刊されている警察関係の歴史資料群について、リストアップとデータベース化の作業が必須である。そこで、まず全国都道府県の発行(あるいは編纂)した警察史をできうる限り収集した。そこから、関連する資料を探し出し、その資料がどこに所蔵されているかなどの情報をNACSISなどのネットワークや商用データベースを利用しながら整理している。現在は、収集したデータをデータベース化するために作業を継続中である。いっぽう、それらの資料のうち、風俗警察(風俗統制の事実経緯)に関する記述を抜き出し、公共空間の秩序化(とりわけ明治の開化期と第二次世界大戦の終結後の秩序維持の時期)がどのようなプロセスを経て現在の秩序の基礎となったのかを分析しつつある。以上の二つの作業が今回の助成にかかわるものであるが、成果の公表までには至っていない。ひとつには、多くの研究者が利用可能な形態をめざしているので、できるだけ資料の完璧を期したいということがある。また、より多くの利用に供するべく、ネットワークなどの上にデータベースとして乗せたいという希望があるためである。ただし、ある程度のデータベースが完成した段階で、大学の発行する紀要などのメディアを通じて活字資料としても公開する予定である。
