わが国の高校教育は急速に量的拡大を遂げ、「多様な」生徒を受け入れる教育機関となっている。それに加えて、生徒数減少期における公立高校の「活性化戦略」として、高校教育改革が積極的に展開されるようになっている。学校間連携などの履修方法や教授・学習方法の改革、あるいは特別非常勤講師の採用など、さまざまな動きが見られる。なかでも、単位制高校の創設は、硬直化した従来の高校教育のあり方を弾力化する方策として大きな注目を集めている。本研究では、各高校の先導的実践を踏まえながら、単位制高校の意味と機能について理論的・実証的な検討を加えるものである。そうしたなかで、単位制高校の多様な実像が浮かび上がるとともに、高校教育改革の本質を探る手がかりが得られた。たとえば、(1)単位制高校は「高校中退」や「不登校」を経験した生徒が再び「学び」の意味を再解釈する契機を提供していること、(2)その一方で、マクロに見れば「単位制高校」の改革は、近代の枠組みの範囲内の弥縫策にとどまっているということ、などである。また、将来的に単位制高校の主流をなすであろう「総合学科」は本年度45校を数えているが、すでに一部の高校では従来の「総合選択制」への「縮減」が起こりつつある。しかも、そうした「効率化」には既成の社会秩序などさまざまな要因が関連している。端的に言って、高校教育改革の「局所化」は、既存の構造の拡大再生産にすぎない。だが、本研究では、この種の「局所化」を超えるホリスティックな視点をリファインするとともに、そうした試みを展開している高校を発掘し、実践と研究の新しいあり方を探る手がかりを得ることができた。
