EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. There is growing concern about a serious decline in the number of physician scientists being trained in this country. Physician scientists are a critical link in the medical research chain. Surveys have revealed thatan important influence for medical students who choose academic careers is the opportunityfor a mentored research experience during medical school. The purpose of this training grant is to support summer research fellowships for medical students at the Universityat Buffalo School Medicine. Over the past decade, the areas of infectiousdiseases, microbiology and immunologyhave generated intense research activity. New techniques and discoveries have revolutionizedresearch in these disciplines. The University at Buffalo has a rich and exciting environment to perform research in these areas. This training grant will support stipends for eight first and second year medical studentsto spend 10 weeks during their summer sessions performing a mentored research project. Minority applicants will be actively recruited. Twenty faculty members with active, extramurally funded research programs will serve as a pool of mentors for students.The foundation of the program will be the experience of performing original research guided by faculty who are experts in the field with highly successful track records in mentoring trainees. A weekly seminar/discussion series during which faculty will discuss their own research interspersed with sessions on scientific integrity and related issues will supplementthe research experience. Students will present their work at an annual research day each fall. Feedback from students and faculty will be sought and the career choices of the participating students will be tracked.
