PAYING THE SLEEP DEBT TO IMPROVE GLUCOSE TOLERANCE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The negative impact of sleep loss on metabolic function has recently been demonstrated. In healthy men, restricted sleep (4 hrs/night) for 1 week markedly diminished glucose tolerance. Extending sleep for 1 week allowd for full recovery. The proposed studies will test the hypothesis that paying the sleep debt in patients with impaired glucose tolerance IGT or diabetes (DM2) will improve glucose tolerance. Patients with IGT or DM2 who have habitual bedtimes <7 hrs/night will be studied in the CRC at baseline and after a 2-week period with intervention (bedtimes extended by 3 hrs/night and instruction in sleep hygiene) or no intervention. Primary endpoints will be measures of oral and intravenous glucose tolerance.
