This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancrease which lowers blood sugar. Insulin's ability to lower blood sugar is decreased in type 2 diabetes, and also in other conditions including high blood pressure, obesity, and some blood fat disorders. Also, insulin's ability to lower blood sugar is decreased with eating a lot of fat, and is improved with exercise. We are doing this protocol in order to show first year medical students the differences in insulin action with a high fat diet and with exercise. In addition, as medical students will be their own study subjects, this also teaches medical students about clinical research and what being a research volunteer is like.
