This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The Statewide Bioinformatics Core was established under BRIN. INBRE continues to play an active role in the statewide core by supporting training opportunities and infrastructure enhancement, as well as providing integrative classroom tools. Dr. James A. Foster, University of Idaho (UI) is the Director of the Statewide Bioinformatics Core. Foster along with Dr. Julia Oxford, Boise State University (BSU) and Dr. Michael Thomas, Idaho State University (ISU) form the Statewide Bioinformatics Committee. In addition, Dr. Celeste Brown (UI) is the Statewide Outreach Coordinator for Bioinformatics. This group of individuals work together to establish the Bioinformatics needs at each institution in the state and provide assistance as needed with the development of bioinformatics tools for the classroom, input into infrastructure development, or by providing training opportunities. 1) Research Universities: The UI expanded its Beowulf cluster, created a new 64-node cluster, added a third large Sun server, and significantly upgraded data storage capacity. 2) Research Partners: BSU, Northwest Nazarene University and Albertson College are collaborating on developing bioinformatics and incorporating these topics into courses such as genetics and biochemistry. Dr. Brown, the statewide bioinformatics coordinator is assisting with the use of bioinformatics in research and teaching. 3) Outreach Colleges: Dr. Brown, Statewide Bioinformatics Coordinator met with all four outreach colleges, Lewis-Clark State College, North Idaho College, Brigham Young University-Idaho and College of Southern Idaho.
