This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
Preliminary studies suggest that by combining the high spatial resolution of functional magnetic resonance imaging with the high temporal resolution of electroencephalography it is possible to obtain noninvasive spatiotemporal maps of cerebral activity. The collaborating investigators have developed hardware, software, and analysis techniques to build a device that allows concurrent EEG and fMRI recordings to be obtained safely and accurately. The collaborating investigators have performed a series of simultaneous fMRI/EEG experiments that investigate the spatial location and temporal processing of event-related potentials in the human brain at MRI up to 7T. They have also used the instrumentation to study intracranial electrophysiologic events in monkeys with concurrent fMRI. A collaboration between Dr. Golby in the Image-Guided Therapy Program and Dr. Bonmassars group aims to adapt this system for use in the intra-operative MRI systems at BWH.
