This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. These developments were directed towards improving the performance of the BioCAT microprobe. A 100 micron aperture was installed to clean up the microbeam generated by the KB mirrors. The aperture was mounted on an YX motorized stage that allows the positioning of the aperture on the microbeam path rather easily. The aperture also acts as a reference point for the diagnosis of position changes of the microbeam. The aperture also allowed us to demonstrate the high stability of the BioCAT beamline and microprobe system. In addition, new scanning software, BioCAT_FMAP, was developed and implemented. This version saves the mapping data using the HDF5 format. This file format was designed for scientific data and has many advantages over the regular ASCII format like: large compression factor, random access to different field. Some minor bugs from previous versions were fixed in this new version.
