This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the
resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and
investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source,
and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is
for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.
X-ray fluorescence on biological samples was performed at the 18ID BioCAT microprobe as part of a hands-on workshop BioCAT ran as part of the National School on Neutron and X-ray Scattering, August 12-25, 2007, Argonne National Laboratory Normal and cancerous prostate tissue from animal models were studied by scanning a 5 micron size x-ray beam in order to determine the elemental composition, particularly Ca, Fe, Cu and Zn, of the samples as a two dimensional map. The 12 keV X-ray beam was focused by using a KB mirrors system. A single element silicon drift detector completed the setup. X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements at the Cu K edge were also performed on the same samples on selected areas. Based on the elemental maps, selected sample spots were scanned to obtain XANES spectra at the Cu K edge. Comparison with Cu standards was also performed to demonstrate the ability of the technique to identify different Cu species. A group of 20 students attended the experiment at Biocat. We have found that participating in APS run workshops a very cost and effort-effective way to do training and dissemination.
