SLEEP TRAJECTORIES IN PARKINSON'S DISEASE

This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. Sleep problems in Parkinson's Disease (PD) occur more frequently than previously suspected, are under-diagnosed and under-treated, and significantly increase disability and caregiver burden when present. We will repeatedly and prospectively measure (3 assessments over the course of the 4-year study) sleep, cognitive and affective changes in a group of patients with early Parkinson's Disease (PD) using state of the art polysomnographic, cognitive and mood function tests. We will test the hypothesis that sleep fragmentation precedes and contributes to mental dysfunction in PD. We will use mixed-effects regression modeling techniques to quantify the contribution of changes in sleep patterns to changes in mental functions.
