This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. With advancing the age the ability of arteries to vasodilate (increase in size to carry more blood) decreases. This is associated with an increased risk of heart attach and stroke. The reasons for this decline are not well understood. Previous studies have shown that regular aerobic exercise can improve the abilities of arteries to vasodilate. The purpose of this study is to determine whether with advancing age arteries are more prone to vasoconstrict (decrease in size) and whether regular aerobic exercise reduces this tendency to vasoconstrict.
