.      Fluorescence microscopy has a wide range of applications in cell and molecular biology, such as characterization of cellular morphology and cellular components,  interaction studies, protein and nucleic acid localisation, etc. The ApoTome 3D imaging system requested here will be added to a fluorescence microscope already owned by our group. This system will greatly enhance the resolution and contrast of thick samples analysed by fluorescence microscopy. The ApoTome uses optical sections to reconstruct 3D images and can produce 2D and 3D images free of stray light with excellent signal-to-noise ratios. Various research programs will benefit from the use of this equipment, ranging from  studies on plant defense responses, pathogen growth and immunology. All four applicants will be using this equipment to obtain data that are central and essential for their research program.
