This proposal is for funding to obtain an FTIR spectrometer with attenuated total reflectance (ATR) attachment for the analysis of thin films. This will be the only instrument at UBC for conducting these types of experiments, which are especially necessary for ultra-thin films. The proposed instrument will be used primarily for the investigations of the PIs in areas of supramolecular materials, conducting polymer chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. As many of the materials being developed in the PIs' laboratories are in the form of thin films, their analysis by standard IR techniques is uninformative. ATR offers the ability to probe thin films from the surface, with a significant enhancement in the signal. This technique will allow analysis of thin films that are attached to non-transparent substrates, such as gold. The PIs have active research groups, with more than 25 members now carrying out research projects under their guidance. The proposed instrumentation will play a central role in the training of these scientists, as well as other researchers at UBC.
