This grant requests funds for a multi-component ion analysis system to accurately measure relevant physiological ions (Na+, Cl-, Ca2+ & Mg2+), total osmolality, and acid-base parameters (carbonate) in blood and water samples. This system will accommodate the requirements of scientists working at Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) and will help to attract new North American and international researchers to BMSC. The multi-component ion analysis system will significantly improve the ability of researchers to gather data from animals exposed to a variety of environmental conditions and will serve researchers from many disciplines including comparative physiology, molecular and cell biology, marine chemistry and marine neurobiology. Moreover, this equipment will also be available to researchers from other disciplines such as marine ecology, evolutionary biology, oceanography, invasive species biology, developmental and reproductive biology, and conservation biology for measuring ion content in deep, near-shore and estuarine waters. Acquisition of the multi-component ion analysis system by BMSC will significantly enhance the capability, and hence attractiveness, of this important NSERC-funded facility to support an eclectic array of researchers, allowing them to stay longer and complete studies not previously possible.
