Renix Inc. (London, Ontario) has licensed a novel and potentially revolutionary ion exchange technology from the University of Western Ontario termed as the Liquid Solid Circulating Fluidized Bed (LSCFB) Ion Exchanger. The LSCFB system uses two liquids in different ways in order to accomplish the ion exchange steps of adsorption, desorption, and to maintain dynamic seals. Although the system functions well under the existing configurations, it uses large quantities of water and eluant chemicals. In order to improve the system and make it more attractive for industrial application, this project will evaluate several potential modifications that will reduce the consumption of chemicals and water.
