Laparoscopic surgery is a type of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) in which long slender instruments and an endoscope enter the patient's body through small incisions. Although MIS reduces tissue trauma, post-operative pain and recovery time, it requires a high level of experience and skill, and poses challenges to surgical trainees. During advanced minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, the surgeon (instructor) and assistant (trainee) typically have both hands occupied by surgical instruments. In addition, both have their own monitor in the operating room on which the surgical image appears. This configuration in the operating room complicates the delivery of instruction while performing surgery, as the instructor is often forced to release one of the instruments to point to the trainee's monitor to provide instruction.
