The goal of the proposed research is to obtain a better understanding of two important aspects of perception: visual memory, and the perception of correlation. Although various aspects of visual memory are somewhat understood (e.g. iconic memory, visual short-term memory, visual long-term memory), this understanding is far from complete. One goal of this project is to better understand what they are, and how they relate to (and work with) each other. The other is to understand how people perceive statistical structure in data visualizations, something which is very poorly understood at the moment.
