We propose a research plan in the areas of analysis and development of efficient transmission and resource allocation techniques applicable to heterogeneous wireless access networks through the notion of cognitive cooperation. We will study and develop cooperative transmission strategies using adaptive coding/modulation schemes that exploit diversity available in multiple dimensions, e.g., frequency, space, time, signal, code, multi-user, to increase system capacity in time-varying, frequency-selective fading channels. We plan to address several open questions with vast potential for use in a multi-node network, including bandwidth and power-efficient relaying and relay selection strategies, introduction of compression diversity among multiple relays and/or combination of cooperation with cognition. Furthermore, intelligent and efficient use of multiple-antenna techniques among nodes can bring benefits from the collaborative advantages in a distributed manner via network-coded cooperative diversity schemes.
