Failure localization has long been considered as a critical task in the control and management of all-optical Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) mesh networks, which concerns whether an efficient survivable routing and failure-dependent protection schemes can be deployed. Motivated by the importance of the problem, this project explores novel frameworks and approaches in the network optical domain via generic out-of-band monitoring, where supervisory lightpaths (S-LPs) are launched to acquire network failure status and localize the failed shared risk link group (SRLG). We first investigate and formulate the problem for an interesting scenario of network fault management systems, called Network-Wide Local Unambiguous Failure Localization (NWL-UFL), where every node can instantly and precisely identify the failed SRLG according to locally available on-off status of the S-LPs. This is to completely avoid any possible control plane signalling effort, such that the failure localization can be performed exclusively in the optical domain. Since NWL-FUL S-LP solutions may consume significant amount of monitoring resources when the number of SRLGs is large, we introduce a framework of monitoring burst (m-burst), aiming to trade the monitoring responsiveness and control signalling overhead with the consumed monitoring resources. Based on the knowledge and techniques developed in the previous two topics, we will further investigate an integrated design of survivable routing and failure localization, where a new framework called Failure Presumed Protection (FPP) will be studied.
