Gay Lea Foods is a co-operative owned by over 1,200 farmers and produces dairy products such as butter, cheese, and milk. The wastewater generated in the company's production facility in Toronto is currently being treated in a nearby municipal wastewater treatment plant. In order to stay market competitive and leave a smaller environmental footprint Gay Lea Foods would like to treat their wastewater within its own facility by applying anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic wastewater treatment requires less energy than activated sludge treatment, such as applied in the municipal system, and also recovers energy in form of utilizable methane. With the help of an NSERC Engage grant and in collaboration with the University of Toronto, a feasibility study will be conducted to investigate the anaerobic treatability of the company-specific wastewater.
