The goal of this project is to explore practical aspects of an innovative quantum semiconductor photonic biosensing (QS-PB) technology and fabricate a portable QS-PB device dedicated for detection of Legionella pneumophila in water. A specially designed biochip chamber will be interfaced with microfluidic devices designed for collecting water, concentrating bacteria and delivering samples for highly sensitive and rapid analysis. The QS-PB approach represents a broad platform technology that is expected to find applications for rapid detection of other bacterial and viral pathogens in clinical samples - a subject of particular interest to the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Sherbrooke that we have been interacting with for several years.
