CV Studios is a print solutions company that manages, designs and prints advertising collateral and promotional displays for major Canadian retailers. As digital media slowly takes over for print, they have started investing into digital merchandising and distribution. CV Studios is currently moving towards digital display units for their customers, using Lithium-ion (Li-ion)-powered TV monitors. The challenge is to get digital content to the leaseline that is battery powered and can last at least 12 hours. Li-ion batteries, although popularly used, have been highly uneconomic for energy storage, overshooting cost requirements by a large margin. The cycle life of a Li-ion battery pack ranges between 1000 and 1500, for state-of-charge (SOC) range between 40% and 90% (linear voltage range). The main issues with Li-ion battery packs include: cycle life, calendar life, energy density, power density, and safety. These issues will be addressed in this proposal using a practical approach in the form of a smart power electronic cell voltage equalizer.
