Camosun College is pleased to announce that Camosun Innovates will be partnering for the first time with WoodsCan Industries Inc., a Victoria-based company that produces battery-powered electric air horns. WoodsCan Industries holds patents on their technology, and sells its Hornet brand air horns primarily to the North American drilling and blasting industry. With support from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) on an Engage Grant, WoodsCan Industries will be better positioned to expand its product line and grow its company with products targeting other markets for air horns including the sport and recreational boating industries. The project will focus on the design, testing, and preparation for manufacturing, for a low-cost air horn that will meet the needs of sport and recreational boating users. The horn, with its battery system, will eliminate the use of harmful HFCs currently being discharged into the atmosphere and also reduce the amount of solid waste associated with traditional disposable canister-style air horns, meaning the total carbon footprint is much less. The project will involve students from Camosun College who will gain valuable real life skills and expertise while working on the development of new innovative technology.
