Twin Rivers Paper operates an integrated platform of paper, pulp and lumber mills. The pulp and energy operations at Edmundston are an integral component of the East Papers pulp and paper complex, delivering 100% of its bleached softwood sulphite and bleached groundwood pulp to the Madawaska paper mill for the manufacture of specialized packaging, label and publishing papers. A large 38MW biomass cogeneration plant produces electricity that is sold to New Brunswick Power. At the Edmundston mill, in their pulping process, wood knots, an important low value by-product, is generated. The company is looking for ways to add value to this by-product either by reintegrating it to the pulp or by converting it into energy. CCNB's Biorefinery Technology Scale-up Centre is going to test the use of a pilot scale Steam Fractionation System as a pre-treatment in the process of converting the wood knots into a higher value product.
