We will develop an integrated micro-power unit to supply power to a GPS tracker. It will harvest mechanical energy from compression in the shoe insoles during walking. Since the tracker will be uses by seniors and others, an important constraint on the power unit is that it does not diverge from the dimensions, weight, and mechanical characteristic of typical shoe insoles. The project involves the development of a micro-energy harvester to convert compression to electrical power, a power management module to rectify generated power, and a storage unit to store harvested energy. Energy harvesting will occur whenever the user walks, while the tracker will be able draw on stored electrical power 'on-demand' to meet a predefined transmission schedule.
