Flow cytometry is a powerful technique used in drug discovery, immunology, oncology, proteomics, genomics, and disease control. The global flow cytometry market has been projected to increase from $4.1 billion in 2015 to over $6.3 billion by 2020, driven by an increased demand for high throughput screening techniques in proteomics, genomics, and stem cell research, as well as the rising prevalence of diseases such as cancer and HIV. In this collaborative project between the University of Toronto and BD Canada (BD), we will develop new polymer-based fluorophores for enhanced multicolour flow cytometry. Working in partnership with BD, the Seferos lab will design and synthesize novel fluorescent polymers incorporating highly emissive chromophores located either within the polymer backbone (Project stream 1), or attached as pendant groups (Project stream 2).
