During my second term as a Tier II CRC in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at Simon Fraser University, I propose to: 1) develop new tools for detecting, measuring and avoiding dangerous biodiversity change (with sharks and their relatives as a case study); 2) train students and staff in the science of marine biodiversity change and build capacity among national and international fisheries scientists, ecologists and policy makers, through my leadership of a global scientific network (IUCN Shark Specialist Group); and 3) support policy development and raise societal awareness through effective communication of benefits of species conservation for Canadians.
